Idaho Trip, May-June, 2005

Pendleton OR to Moscow, ID 17 May 05 186 miles

We left the Casino Hotel at 0810 since John wanted to visit the Tamastslikt Indian Museum which opened at 9 AM, we drove to the parking lot and waited for it to open. The museum was interesting - it was the Indian perspective of the settling of the west. It was a very large and modern building with much wasted space - soaring ceilings and long empty hallways.
After visiting there we drove to Walla Walla and I thought we had missed the turn to the Whitman Memorial, so we turned instead into Fort Walla Walla Historical park. Glad we did. There was a small park with buildings from the frontier times, they were were originals moved to this location. They were locked and had windows and doors that one could see the inside through. But the most interesting area had 5 huge buildings, each housing a different set of historical items from huge farm machinery to small items of everyday life. We spent a bit of time walking around and looking at the displays, plus taking our pictures.
We left there and drove to the WHitman Memorial, staying only a few minutes, we had already read the story of their massacre in the Tamastslikt museum and I had toured this area in the 80's. From the Whitman Memorial we wanted to have lunch, it was 1 PM and we were quite hungry. On the outskirts of Walla Walla we found a restaurant named Mr. Ed's and had a lunch that consisted of so much food we could have had 3 meals from it. I took half my pork BBQ sandwich and salad with us for supper!
Leaving there we set out for Moscow ID and Bonnie and Rogers place, they were expecting us this day. The drive was through the Palouse region of WA state, all farms where the crop is mostly wheat. Boring drive. We did pass through a small town named Dayton, we stopped to see a small portion of it since the literature I read told of the town having about 177 buildings on the National Historic Register. I paid for and toured the old RR Station while John walked about and took pictures of the old courthouse, the first one in the Northwest Territory. The entire town would be interesting to visit, but we were really running late in getting to our destination, so we drove on.
Another set of towns that could be of interest we only had time to drive through, Lewiston ID and Clarkston WA. They are on the Snake River in a beautiful Valley. BIG drawback, there is a very smelly pulp mill in the area!
Leaving Lewiston we climbed for a few miles up the Lewiston Hill - spectacular view from the top looking down on the valley. We didn't stop at the overlook due to the fact it was on the opposite side of the road, (we said we would stop on the return trip - turns out we didn't come back this way). The drive continued through the farms and forests, it rained again and again, we have experienced more rain than sun so far this trip!
We arrived in Moscow and John knew the way to Bonnie and Rogers farm, I really thought he was lost, but soon found out he wasn't! They own 5 acres and have a mini farm, an old house, lots of outbuildings and animals. Two dogs, KC and Nevada; turkey which John determined are Narragansett, quite rare these days since turkeys have been bred for more white meat and are far from the original species. The chickens they have produce so many eggs for them that many are sold at the local coop. The cattle they had were 'Highland' cattle, very cute compared to American cattle! I don't recall seeing them in the flesh before, only pictures of them.
Roger and Bonnie were very nice, we chatted and then between rain showers we got into their hot tub for awhile, had a pizza and went to bed. Bonnie works and is up early in the morning, we kept her up later than her usual bedtime. Roger is retired, looking for a part time job until Bonnie can retire. John and I slept in our van since their house has only one bedroom and one bath. It was nice sleeping though, soft rain during the night and cool weather. Chickens and dogs woke us the next morning!
