We left Bordertown at 0830, it was a lovely, sunny morning! John went to the Casino for breakfast, I had a banana while getting myself ready for the day. Driving up 395 past Honey Lake, we took a short cut so we missed Susanville. The drive was again lovely, not as much snow but the entire desert is several shades of green with water running everywhere. Wildlife is abundant, we saw deer, antelope and jillions of ground squirrels, many of them run over.
We stayed on 395 until the 31 cutoff, way past Lakeview. We stopped for lunch in Lakeview, it being one of 3 small towns in 254 miles that had a restaurant. We dropped into the Chamber of Commerce and got some literature, they had nearly nothing on John Day Fossil Beds. We also took a picture of an old brick building that was interesting.
We continued on our way, it was an easy day of driving since there isn't much traffic in Eastern Oregon!
We stopped early for the night, 2 PM, but had planned on Summer Lake Hot Spring as an overnight stop. We set up the van and John got into the mineral pool, I walked around and took pictures. Later we both got into the pool with a couple of ladies and several children who were playing ball. We chatted with them before they left.
After dinner we played a game of Scrabble, we started the game outside, but after an hour is was too cold so we finished inside the van. About 9 PM a great wind came up - blowing tents away and causing people attending the party to scurry back to their campsites to batten things down. One trailer awning was ripped from its frame and was lying on the ground. After a bit the wind died down, but the rains came pouring, about 11 PM it had slowed to a drizzle and continued all night long!
